Complexity is normal in life, simplicity takes effort.
I’m pinning this blog and will be updating it monthly through 2019. I’ve been struggling for a few years with over extending myself and maintaining a pretty complex schedule. At any given time I’ve been involved with 7+ companies and another 3-4 side projects. I also travel almost every month of the year. When I’m busy, I push 100 + hour work weeks and can go a couple weeks with little sleep before I inevitably crash for three days and start the cycle all over again.
The end of last year was emotionally brutal for me. I won’t detail it here but it will be the subject a not so future blog post. For the first time in what seems forever, I was actually down for a long while. To be quite frank, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and even though I have practiced compartmentalization for years, I couldn’t get a handle on it. At the start of this year, I promised myself that I’d begin to simplify my life, but it has turned out to be much more complex than I thought!
Starting Simple? – January
Not such a simple start. Japan and Vegas within 10 days of the New Year But as I progressed through the month there are two things I did to start simplifying my life. First I identified what was most important to me and then I started eliminating everything else. This went for all facets of my life.
I started off by removing myself from a few projects that I was working on which was simple enough. There are a few larger business plays that I have started my exit from but those will take time. However, the wheels are in motion and I feel good about it. I also
deactivated deleted the majority of my social accounts. I kept Twitter, which I rarely post on and for some reason, I’m still in a love / hate relationship with reddit. I’ve deleted several accounts this year but it keeps dragging me back in!
Identifying things of Importance – February
Still traveling quite a bit. One of my companies just had a large turnover in staff which was totally unexpected. Losing a few guys in a small company is never easy but in this case it was a necessary thing as their actions were detrimental to the business. I’ve had to cancel meetings, cut trips short, get temps and help hire as one of the lost positions was management.
On a personal note, and this is kind of crazy, but I think I’m in like with someone? And I met a cool doggo. This came completely out of the blue and has caught me off guard. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had “Feels” like this so I guess I’ll see how it plays out.
Anyhow, back to the Biz! Through the storm I’ve just endured with my IT play I’ve Identified the companies I want to stay involved in past this year and am now working towards making that happen. I’m looking to only have passion plays by the end of 2020. #happydance – A few random photos from Feb below.
Relaxing & Purging My Stuff – March
I took a few needed days to decompress. Great company, good food and fun adventures. When that was over, I started to purge my belongings. I didn’t have many things (outside of clothing) to begin with, but this felt absolutely amazing. I went from a full armoire, six drawer dresser and two closets of clothes down to half a closet and three drawers. I got rid of over 80% of my clothing and it feels great. I also purged boxes of personal items I was holding on to for no reason and a chair, dining table and a TV that I never used. I found a service to come take it all away and I feel accomplished.
I also bought a Tesla (actually two) but more on this next month. One won’t arrive for over a year from now. The other is special.
Biz has been absolutely great this month. A few recently launched e-commerce plays are doing well and I started working on a new app which is going to make a friend / client a lot of money. My IT company is starting to find its stride again and most things are on auto pilot this month.
Of course, life is yet to be super simple for me and my emotions have been all over the place because relationships are apparently really hard…
I also started a new side project, Hike Mode / Goat Mode. I’m guessing I’ll roll it out in a couple of months depending on how long it takes me to source the designers. It’s just a for funs thing but I think I can net six figures from it without very much effort. I’m justifying it as a passion play 😉 /duck
Mostly Hawaii hikes below, though I snuck in a Washington and Oregon hike this month as well.
April was a very odd month. I’m still processing all that transpired. I was forced to rest for the first week and not work while I was recouping from a small accident. I then spent the next few weeks traveling. I downsized my life considerably, shredding a large part of what bound me to Hawaii and I’m in the process of selling one of my companies which is a large time suck in my life. I feel like I didn’t get a lot of “work” done this month but I’m absolutely on the right path to simplification.
